Academic Success at MVHS
At Mountain View High School, we value active learning in every class, so we encourage students to attend all classes regularly. If a student is absent, an automated phone system will notify the home or Parent(s)/Guardian(s) at work on the day of the absence.
School attendance is mandated by Colorado law. The only absences that are excused are those according to Colorado State law, district policy, and those defined herein. These absences include:
- Illness
- Family emergencies
- Medical
Absences must be excused by Parent(s)/Guardian(s) within 24 hours of the absence.
Students are expected to complete work missed during an absence. Please communicate with teachers to ensure opportunities for make-up work are provided.
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and students may find staff contact information using the online staff directory.
Excused and Unexcused Absences
Absences due to illness, injury, or medical reasons will be considered excused if the Parent(s)/Guardian(s) contact the attendance office within 24 hours. You can reach the MVHS attendance office 24 hours a day at 970-613-7805.
If a student reaches 10 or more absences, additional documentation may be required to excuse the absence. Generally, a student is allowed up to ten excused absences per school year without additional documentation.
Students who have 10 consecutive days of absence may be subject to withdrawal from MVHS for non-attendance.

Pre-arranged Absence
Students are required to submit a pre-arranged absence form to the Main Office at least 48 hours before the planned absence. This form can be obtained from the Main Office. The request must be accompanied by a signed note from the Parent(s)/Guardian(s) or an email to the grade-level administrator, specifying the dates and reasons for the absence. Approval from a school administrator is necessary for all pre-arranged absences, including those for family emergencies or religious observances.
Prior to the absence(s), students should make arrangements with their teachers to complete any missed class work.
School-Related Absences
Tardy
All students are encouraged to arrive promptly to class and be prepared to engage in learning from the start.
A tardy is defined as arriving within ten minutes after the class begins on eight-period days and within twenty minutes on block days. Students arriving after this time will be marked as absent, and the teacher will record the time of arrival in the attendance file on IC
Excused tardies occur when a student enters class late with a written excuse from an MVHS staff member. Unexcused tardies may result in consequences from the teacher and/or administrator.
Suspension
Each day of out-of-school suspension, as required by state law, will be recorded as an absence. During suspension, students are responsible for obtaining all missed assignments and class materials.
For out-of-school suspensions, students have one day to complete make-up work for each day of suspension. They are encouraged to use Google Classroom or email to stay updated with class assignments.
Students serving in-school or out-of-school suspensions are not permitted to participate in activities or events on the same day or, if it falls on a Friday, over the weekend. If a student purchases a ticket for an event and is unable to attend due to absence or suspension, please contact the Ms. Kahl, the athletics/activities secretary.
Leaving Early
For any student leaving during scheduled class time or outside of off-block privileges (available to 11th and 12th grades only), a parent/guardian must check them out at the main office.
In case of an emergency, please contact our main office at 970-613-7800, and we will promptly relay any emergency messages. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) are asked to not call or text message their student during instructional time.
Lunch
MVHS offers off-campus lunch options for 10th-12th grade students every weekday. 9th grade students are required to stay on campus throughout lunchtime, which is scheduled separately from the other grades on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, all students will have lunch at the same time. During lunch, all students remaining on campus are required to use the cafeteria or patio areas. If students need to meet with staff members during lunch, they must obtain a pass.
Students visiting local businesses or restaurants during lunch are expected to behave responsibly. Inappropriate behavior may result in consequences determined by the administration.
