Assembly Conduct
Assemblies at MVHS are organized for the educational benefit and enjoyment of both students and staff. Attendance is mandatory for all students, who are expected to remain until the conclusion of the program. During assemblies, students are encouraged to uphold high standards of conduct, showing respect to speakers, performers, and their peers. Any inappropriate behavior will be subject to disciplinary measures.
Bicycles, Scooters, and Skateboards
Bicycles and skateboards are welcome modes of transportation to and from school. To ensure safety on campus, students are required to pick up and carry skateboards, scooters, skates, and similar devices while on school grounds. Bicycles should be securely parked and locked at designated bike racks. Students are responsible for properly securing their bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and other similar items brought onto campus.
Bullying Prevention
Board Policy JICDE's Definition of Bullying
Bullying is defined as the use of coercion to obtain control over another person or to be habitually cruel to another person. Bullying can occur through a written, verbal or electronically transmitted (cyberbullying) expression or by means of a physical act or gesture. Bullying is prohibited on district property, at district sanctioned activities and events, when students are being transported in any vehicle dispatched by the district or one of its schools, off school property when such conduct has a nexus to school, or any district curricular or non-curricular activity or event.
Potential Disciplinary Action
Any person found to have engaged in bullying, retaliation against anyone participating in an investigation of alleged bullying or any related disciplinary proceeding, or reporting bullying in bad faith as further defined in Board policy JICDE, will be subject to disciplinary action. 4. Information regarding the procedures of reporting matters of bullying:
Students (or any other person, including the Parent(s)/Guardian(s) on behalf of a target of bullying) may report matters of bullying orally, or in writing, to any teacher, counselor, or member of the school administration. These procedures will provide that any person, including the student targeted by the alleged bullying or the student’s Parent(s)/Guardian(s), may anonymously report acts of bullying or retaliation to teachers, counselors, and administrators.
JICDE-E-1, Bullying Report Form, is available to support reporting of incidents of alleged bullying. Reports of bullying may also be made through Safe2Tell.
Care of Our Campus
Let's maintain the beauty of our school and grounds. Demonstrating school PRIDE sends a positive message to everyone. Please remember:
- Dispose of trash in designated bins.
- Enjoy food only in designated areas.
- Keep gum and graffiti off floors and walls.
- Treat school furniture and equipment with respect; they're here for student use, not abuse.
Students who damage school or personal property will be responsible for repair or replacement costs, or both. Administrative disciplinary actions may also be taken, including the involvement of the School Resource Officer or the Loveland Police Department.
To support a clean environment and prevent pest issues, all food and drink must be disposed of properly. Classroom food and drink consumption is permitted at the teacher's discretion. Please refrain from bringing paper cups or bottles without lids/caps into the school building.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
Mountain View High School wishes to provide each student and teacher a distraction-free learning environment every school day. Research shows that when access to personal electronic devices (cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, tablets, gaming systems, etc.) is moderated during the school day, students are more engaged socially and academically. To ensure such a learning environment, MVHS will be implementing the following cell phone/personal electronic device policies. Thank you for your support in helping us provide a distraction-free learning environment at MVHS.
Cell phones and/or any personal electronic devices may be brought to school; however, these items must remain off/silent and securely stowed away from distraction for the entire class period to ensure that the use of these devices does not disrupt the learning environment or distract yourself and others. Please remember that per Thompson School District Board Policy having personal electronic devices on campus is a privilege, please use responsibly. Mountain View High School will not be responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal electronic devices.
PRIDE: Be Present, Show Respect, Get Involved, Honor Diversity, Give Effort
Student Expectations
- As students enter their classrooms, their personal electronic devices should be turned off/silenced and securely placed in a designated area or in their backpacks in order to create a focused and distraction-free learning environment.
- Exceptions can be made at the discretion of the teacher for academic purposes.
First Offense: The personal electronic device is surrendered, and securely held within the classroom until the end of the class period, at which point it can be collected by the student.
Second Offense: The personal electronic device is surrendered, and securely held in the main office until the end of the school day, at which point it can be collected by the student.
Third (Additional) Offense: The personal electronic device is surrendered, and securely held in the main office until the end of the school day, at which point it can be collected by the student.
Note: Failure to comply with a staff member's request for your phone will result in additional disciplinary action.
As a staff we understand that Parent(s)/Guardian(s) may need to communicate with their adolescents during the school day. Please use the main number for Mountain View High School (970-613-7800) and a staff member will relay the message.
Computer/Chromebook Expectations for Use
At MVHS, maintaining academic integrity and respecting digital resources is crucial. Actions such as plagiarism, invasion of privacy, unauthorized access, copyright violations, and tampering with computer systems may result in disciplinary measures and potential legal consequences.
Every MVHS student is required to sign a contract outlining guidelines for internet access and computer usage. Respecting and properly caring for computer equipment ensures reliable access for all students and staff. Devices should be used primarily for educational purposes, and accessing non-educational sites like live chats or online gaming platforms is prohibited. Additional digital restrictions may be imposed as necessary.
It's expected that all students have a current Responsible Use Policy (RUP) on file and adhere to these rules, along with any specific classroom expectations.
Dances
MVHS dances are exclusive events for current MVHS students and their approved guests. They are not open to the public. Students may bring guests to dances if they have completed guest forms by the specified deadlines. Age restrictions apply to all guests.
Guest passes can be obtained during school hours and must be signed by an administrator at least 24 hours before the dance. Each eligible student may bring one approved guest.
For security reasons, all bags and materials are subject to inspection upon arrival and during the event. Re-entry to the dance venue is not permitted once a person leaves.
Students must dress appropriately according to school guidelines, which apply to all aspects of the dance. Both students and guests must present their IDs at the door for entry.
Deliveries
To ensure safety and security, MVHS does not accept deliveries on behalf of students, including food, beverages, flowers, gifts, and other items. Please inform anyone arranging deliveries for you that these items will not be accepted at the front door. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Discipline Guidelines
Mountain View High School will follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Thompson R2-J Discipline Code. Mountain View High School retains the right to initiate police contact regarding violations of our discipline code. All students and Parent(s)/Guardian(s) are expected to review yearly and behave accordingly.
Disrespect, Harassment, Bullying, or Discriminatory Behavior
At MVHS, we uphold a zero-tolerance policy towards disrespectful behavior, discrimination, harassment, and bullying. Any student found engaging in such conduct will face disciplinary action.
If a student experiences disrespect, it is crucial to promptly discuss it with an administrator, counselor, or staff member. This ensures that appropriate measures can be taken to address the situation effectively.
Dress Code
Districtwide standards on student attire are intended to ensure that all students are treated equitably and benefit from a safe learning environment. The Board of Education recognizes that students have a right to express themselves through dress and personal appearance and the responsibility for the dress and appearance of students generally rests with the student and their parent(s)/guardian(s).
However, students shall not wear apparel that is deemed disruptive or potentially disruptive to the classroom environment or to the maintenance of an overall safe and equitable school environment for all students. Students are expected to dress appropriately for all school activities. The following general guidelines will be in effect:
- Shoes, sandals, or boots must be worn in the buildings in order to avoid injury and disease.
- Students must wear tops (shirts) and bottoms (pants, sweatpants, shorts, skirts, dresses, leggings)
- Traditionally known private parts of the body must be covered with non-transparent material. Undergarments should not be visible. Sunglasses, bandanas and/or hats may only be worn inside the building with permission from an administrator
- The following will not be allowed: Any clothing, paraphernalia, grooming, jewelry, hair coloring, accessories, or body adornments that are or contain any advertisements, symbols, words, slogans, patches, or pictures that:
- refer to drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or weapons
- are of a sexual nature
- by virtue of color, arrangement, trademark, or other attributes denote membership in gangs which advocate drug use, violence, or disruptive behavior
- are obscene, profane, vulgar, lewd, or legally libelous
- threaten the safety or welfare of any person
- promote any activity prohibited by the student code of conduct
- are racist in nature or include derogatory comments or slurs against groups of people
- otherwise disrupt the teaching-learning process
All middle and high school students are required to have in their possession an unaltered school issued photo identification (ID) during school hours, or at such times, locations, and activities specifically identified by the building principal.
Clarifications about these points as they relate to MVHS procedures are as follows:
- Hats will be permitted in the building. Teachers have the discretion of asking you to remove your hat in their classroom.
- Sunglasses are not to be worn inside the building.
- Bandanas (any color except purple) are not allowed at MVHS during school and at all school-sponsored activities.
- Accessories such as spiked dog collars, spiked rings or bracelets, and chains of any kind and length are not to be worn or brought to school. These items are subject to immediate confiscation.
- Trench coats or dusters are generally not permitted and teachers and school staff have the discretion to ask you to remove them.
- Shorts/pants must cover undergarments and be worn around the waist.
- Face paint or makeup that obscures the face is not permitted.
This list is not meant to be exhaustive; rather, it is intended to provide you with some idea of acceptable standards of dress. MVHS and the district reserve the right to ban any article of clothing that is disruptive to the educational process.
Any article of clothing or any item identified with violence or gang involvement will/can be banned at any time.
Students who violate the dress code standards will be asked to remedy the situation or they can call Parent(s)/Guardian(s) to bring appropriate clothing.
Failure to comply with the above options will result in disciplinary action.
Drivers and Parking
Parking at MVHS requires registration and the display of valid parking stickers prominently in the right rear window with the parking number visible. Parking is open without assigned spots, allowing students to park in any available numbered space in the student lot on the east side (front) of the building. The following guidelines ensure smooth operations:
- All vehicles must have a parking sticker by the end of the second week after school begins.
- Students may not obstruct the emergency lane at any time.
- Students may not park in staff parking on the west and south sides of the building at any time.
- Students must park without occupying two spaces or crossing lines without caution.
- Accessing vehicles for school supplies or books after arrival is not allowed; cars are not substitutes for lockers.
- Loitering in or around vehicles or the parking lot is not permitted.
- Upon arrival, students should promptly park, lock their vehicles, and refrain from returning until the end of the school day.
- During lunch, students are not permitted to linger in cars.
- Parent(s)/Guardian(s) may drop off or pick up students in the emergency lane at the front (East) of the school and are encouraged to use the student parking lot while waiting.
- The back area and lanes on the West side of the school are designated for bus transportation and not accessible to parents/guardians or students.
- Each student receives one complimentary parking sticker; additional stickers can be purchased for $5.00 each.
- All accidents must be reported to the SRO/Loveland Police Department.
- Students are expected to observe safe driving practices, including compliance with parking and traffic signs, as well as state traffic laws. These practices include:
- Following all parking and traffic flow signs as well as all traffic laws established by the State of Colorado.
- Speed limit in the parking lot is 10 mph.
- Students using school bus transportation will access buses through the West entrance, with buses dropping off and picking up students in designated areas; personal vehicles are restricted from these areas.
Field Trips and After School Activities
At all times, remember that you are a representative of MVHS. This means adhering to school rules during field trips, after-school events, games (both home and away), dances, and any other school-sponsored functions. Your conduct reflects our school community, so let's uphold our standards with pride.
Fines and Fees
Fines must be paid in the Main (Finance) Office or online
- Fees will be waived for students qualifying for free or reduced price school meals under the Federal Free or Reduced Price Meal policy.
- Students may be charged for optional materials they select for class projects, elective class fees, and other Board adopted fees.
- Students may be required to bring specific, necessary supplies for their own use in the classroom. A requirement of this sort is not considered a fee and is specifically authorized under Colorado Revised Statute 22-32-110(1)(p).
- Extracurricular activities and student organizations may collect fees to cover the cost of specific activities or events.
- Students may be required to pay for all or part of field trip costs relating to admission or entrance fees, meals, and lodging. Field trip fees will be waived for students qualifying for free or reduced price school meals under the Free and Reduced Price Meal Policy. Fees are not tax deductible.
The district is legally authorized to charge fees under Colorado Revised Statute 22-32-117(2)(a) and (c) as amended in 1995 by Senate Bill 103.
Flexible Teaching and Learning Areas (FTLAs)
Hall Pass Policy
During instructional times, students are expected to remain in designated areas unless they have obtained a pass from a staff member to leave a classroom. Only one student is allowed to leave at a time, and students without a valid pass will be guided back to their original classroom.
When leaving the classroom during instructional time, every student must:
- Carry a completed, signed, and current hall pass.
- Complete the Google sign-out/in form.
- Adhere to the "Ten Minute Rule," which prohibits pass issuance/use during the first or last ten minutes of class.
- Each student must have their own individual hall pass; sharing is not permitted.
- Students should not loiter or stay out of the classroom for an extended period.
Every effort should be made to minimize interruption of instructional time.
Illness
If students feel unwell during the school day, they should inform their teacher and then proceed to the health office with a school pass for evaluation.
For students needing to take prescription medication during school hours, it must be checked into the health office and administered by medical clinic personnel. If you require your prescription during the day, it's your responsibility to visit the health office to receive it.
In cases of injury at school, students will be taken to the health office as soon as possible. School medical personnel will assess the injury, notify Parent(s)/Guardian(s), and arrange transportation to the hospital if it's deemed medically necessary.
Lockers
Lockers at MVHS are available for student use. Ninth-grade students will automatically receive a locker, while all other students may request one. It's important to note that all lockers are district-owned property and are not considered personal property by the students using them.
- To maintain a tidy and appropriate environment:
- No stickers, posters, or decorations may be placed on the outside of lockers.
- Inside lockers, pictures, posters, or drawings depicting drugs, alcohol, or sexual content are prohibited.
- Students are encouraged to keep money and valuables at home for safety.
All hall lockers are equipped with combination locks. It's vital not to share your locker combination with anyone to ensure security.
For PE classes, students will need a PE lock and should ensure it is securely latched before leaving the locker room.
Please be aware that school administration reserves the right to search lockers when necessary for safety and compliance. Items may be seized if they are relevant to an investigation. While students are not required to be present during a locker search or seizure, they may be notified afterward if their locker has been accessed by school personnel. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and respectful environment at MVHS.
Lost and Found
Open Blocks
Property Search and Seizure
District employees are authorized to conduct searches of students and/or their property while on district premises or during district activities in accordance with this policy. Any illegal, unauthorized, or contraband materials may be seized as a result of such searches.
Whenever possible, students will be informed of the reasons for conducting a search prior to its initiation. Non-cooperation with district officials during a search may result in disciplinary action.
An administrative report detailing the reasons for the search, its outcomes, and the names of witnesses, will be prepared by the district official conducting the search.
Search of District Property
All lockers, desks, storage, and similar areas provided for student use on district premises are district property and remain at all times under the control of the district. All such lockers, desks, and other storage areas, as well as their contents, are subject to inspection at any time, with or without notice.
No student shall lock or impede access to any locker or storage area except with a lock provided or approved by district officials. Unapproved locks or impediments will be removed and destroyed. Students assume full responsibility for the security of their lockers and storage areas and any loss of or damage to the contents therein.
Search of the Student's Person or Personal Effect
The principal or designee may search the person of a student if the district official has reasonable grounds that the search will uncover the following:
- evidence of a violation of Board policies/regulations, school rules, or federal, state, or local laws
- anything which, because of its presence, presents an immediate danger of physical harm or illness to any person
A search of the person can include the student’s pockets, any object in the student’s possession such as a purse, backpack, book bag, or briefcase, and/or a “pat down” and manipulation of the exterior of the student’s clothing.
These searches may include the removal of extra layers of clothing such as extra shirts, a sweatshirt over another shirt, and jackets. Removal of hats, socks, and shoes is also permitted.
The extent of the search of a student’s person or personal effects, as well as the means to conduct the search, must be reasonably related to the objectives of the search and the nature of the suspected violation. Additionally, district officials conducting the search shall be respectful of privacy considerations, in light of the sex and age of the student.
Searches of the person shall be conducted out of the presence of other students and as privately as possible. At least one additional person shall witness but not participate in the search. A person of the same gender as the student shall conduct any pat-down portion of the search.
The parent/guardian of any student searched shall be notified of the search as soon as reasonably possible.
Searches of the person that require removal of clothing other than a coat or jacket shall be referred to a law enforcement officer. District employees shall not participate in such searches.
Seizure of Items
Anything found in the course of a search conducted by district officials that is evidence of a violation of law or Board policy or school rules or which by its presence presents an immediate danger of physical harm may be:
- seized and offered as evidence in any suspension or expulsion proceeding. Such material shall be kept in a secure place by the principal until it is presented at the hearing.
- returned to the student or the parent or guardian
- turned over to any law enforcement officer in accordance with this policy
- destroyed
Public Displays of Affection
At MVHS, we encourage respectful interactions among students. Holding hands is acceptable, but other public displays of affection are not permitted. Any staff member may issue a verbal reminder as needed. Continued concerns will prompt direct communication with Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and may lead to additional school-based consequences.
Refusal to Identify Yourself
Student Identification Card
Unauthorized Areas and Loitering
Restricted areas on campus are designated by the school and/or district due to concerns about vandalism, trespassing, and supervision. Students are prohibited from loitering in these unauthorized areas before or after school, during passing periods, or during lunch.
These areas include, but are not limited to:
- The ditch area to the west of the school
- The bus loop area to the north of the school
- Private property anywhere around the school, pool, and auditorium lobbies.
Loitering in the parking lot and around vehicles is strictly prohibited at all times throughout the school day.
